Rescue Dogs

There are lot of lovely dogs in rescue without having put a paw wrong. Sometimes the owners’ situation changed and for one or the other reason they could not keep the puppy.
Or sometimes their only fault was to grow up. Unfortunately some dogs in rescue did miss out on going to school and you might have to do a bit of catch up training with them.
Make sure the organisation you are adopting from is reputable and you can visit your new family member as many times as you want.
Despite temperament testing being questionable it might give you some initial information about your new family member.
As hard as it may seem try to pick an outgoing and friendly dog; one that comes to greet you and is happy to interact.
If you have a resident dog you need to have a meet and greet.
If you know your dog does not like other dogs you might reconsider your decisions. It is difficult to live with dogs who do not like each other.

If this sounds cynical I apologize but if you want to ‘save’ a dog with behavioural problems then that is your choice. Be aware, love alone will not be enough, it will require commitment, training, good advice and a lot of patience. Even then it might never be the happy ending and you might have a dog who you will have to manage for their entire life. It can be done but it is not a walk in the park.
